Carotenoid deficiency in wheat leads to altered chloroplast structure and function.
Carotenoids are important for wheat plant growth. When carotenoids were removed using a herbicide, the wheat plants showed changes in their structure and chlorophyll levels. Without carotenoids, the plants had fewer thylakoid partitions and different plastoglobuli appearance. In weak red light, the plants had fewer grana and a lower chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a ratio. The effects were most noticeable at specific herbicide concentrations. The changes in plant structure were linked to the role of carotenoids in plant development.
