Leguminous cover crops boost maize yields in Kenya's smallholder farms.
Leguminous cover crops like Mucuna and Arachis can help improve maize yields in Kenya by enhancing soil fertility. These cover crops can accumulate nitrogen from the air, which benefits the soil and boosts maize production. The study found that Mucuna and Arachis increased soil carbon and nitrogen stocks, leading to higher maize yields in Kakamega, Western Kenya. Maize yields were significantly higher on Nitisol soil compared to Acrisol or Ferralsol. Overall, using leguminous cover crops can be a promising strategy for smallholder farmers to improve their farm productivity in Kenya.
