Shocking appearances of Punks and Goths linked to poor emotional adjustment.
Adolescent peer crowds like Punks and Goths stand out with their unique appearances. A study looked at why some shy youths choose these striking styles. The researchers found that shy youths in these "Radical" crowds were more socially inhibited than others. However, they also had poorer emotional well-being compared to shy youths in different crowds. So, while standing out may help shy youths limit social interactions, it doesn't seem to improve their emotional adjustment.
