Global warming threatens rocky intertidal crabs with shrinking habitat zones.
Rocky intertidal porcelain crabs in different zones have varying heat tolerance limits. Crabs living higher up the shore can handle more heat than those lower down. Tropical crabs have the highest heat limits, while temperate crabs show the biggest difference in heat tolerance between high and low zones. High-zone crabs can't adjust to heat as well as low-zone crabs. With global warming, high-zone crabs are at risk because their heat limits are close to current temperatures.
