Depth of sediment phosphorus reveals lake health and pollution vulnerability
Sediment phosphorus in lakes can show if a lake is clean or polluted. Eutrophic lakes have high phosphorus near the surface, while oligotrophic lakes have more phosphorus buried deep. Mesotrophic lakes are in between. This affects how much phosphorus gets recycled in the water. So, the way phosphorus is buried in sediment can tell us if a lake is healthy or at risk of pollution.
