New Study Reveals How Beaches Grow and Expand Rapidly
The study observed how beaches grow and change shape over time on a barrier spit. Three different ways were found in which the beach widens: by sand accumulating during low tide and moving to the main beach during high tide, by swash bars forming and merging with existing berms, and by berm-ridges rapidly developing on the southern part of the spit. Berm-ridges are the most important features in rapidly growing spits, with arcuate ridges and marsh-filled swales commonly seen in barrier islands.
