Ant colonies grow bigger, workers and queens take on more specialized roles
Colony size influences how worker ants and queen ants divide up their tasks. Bigger ant colonies tend to have more specialized workers and bigger differences between queens and workers. The environment doesn't seem to play a big role in this. This study looked at different ant species to figure this out. The results support the idea that as ant colonies get bigger, their division of labor gets more complex. This could help us understand how social insects evolve and work together.
