Numerical simulation is crucial for developing vehicle powertrains efficiently. Three levels of modeling are used: detailed modeling for early stages, Software in the Loop (SiL) modeling for later stages, and Hardware in the Loop (HiL) modeling with production controllers. Different methodologies and models are described to help engineers design powertrains. Case studies show how numerical simulation can evaluate vehicle performance and fuel economy in Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
