Certification in civil engineering is becoming more important, with specialty certification gaining significance alongside or in place of licensure. Certification and accreditation are related but have differences. International standards now exist for accrediting certification programs, which could lead to global recognition of specialty certification. ASCE should aim for international accreditation of its specialty certification programs and help define international standards for specialty certification and conformity assessment.
