Social networks can help connect big and small ideas in sociology. The strength of friendships between two people affects how much their friend groups overlap. Weak ties between people can actually be very important for spreading influence and information, creating opportunities for moving between groups, and organizing communities. Most network models focus on strong ties within small groups, but paying attention to weak ties can help us understand relationships between different groups and analyze parts of society that aren't clearly defined by close friendships.
