Group norms shape evaluations of individualist vs. collectivist behavior in society.
The article explores how group norms affect how people view individualist and collectivist behaviors. Collectivist behavior is usually seen more positively because it benefits the group. However, when group norms promote individualism, individualist behavior is viewed more favorably. This was confirmed in two studies using an organizational role-play. The level of identification with the group also plays a role in how norms influence behavior.
