Green manure legumes boost soil quality and reduce chemical fertilizer use.
Green manure crops can help improve soil quality and sustainability in agriculture. A study in Minas Gerais, Brazil, compared different green manures like sunhemp, pigeonpea, and velvetbeans. Sunhemp and spontaneous vegetation provided the best soil cover. Spontaneous vegetation, sunhemp, and jackbean had the highest biomass production. Sunhemp had the most nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and boron. Spontaneous vegetation had the most potassium and magnesium. Using these green manures can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.
