Roads and rivers in the Amazon are linked to high deforestation rates, especially near unofficial roads. Protected areas near these transportation networks have significantly lower deforestation rates. If protected areas didn't exist, much more forest would have been cleared. The rapid growth of unofficial roads is a major cause of deforestation in the Amazon, but protected areas are helping to reduce this risk.
