Fertilizing main crop boosts legume yield in intercropping systems.
The study found that adding fertilizers to both the main crop and companion crop in a millet/legume intercropping system is important for maximizing the legume yield. Just supplying nutrients to the main crop can reduce the companion crop's productivity due to shading. The best results were seen when both crops received 100% of the recommended dose of nutrients. However, plots where the main crop got 50% and the companion crop got 100% of the recommended dose had the highest nutrient uptake. This was because the yields increased more than the nutrient concentrations.
