Meat packing technology boosts cattle prices but squeezes beef margins.
Livestock prices and marketing margins have been going down for the past 20 years. New technologies in meat packing have helped save costs and increased cattle and hog prices. However, changes in cattle production weights have caused cattle prices to drop. Overall, improved meat packing technology has raised cattle prices by $1.75 per hundredweight and lowered beef marketing margins by 22.8 cents per pound.
