The researchers used X-ray CT scans to study how soil compaction affects its microstructure. They found that the density and moisture content of the soil can be directly linked to the CT numbers. The scans revealed the formation of shear planes and changes in soil structure towards a more uniform arrangement at the optimum moisture content. Compacting the soil beyond this point led to the dispersion of soil particles and a more uniform structure.
