1 in 4 Australians suffer from mental disorders, many without seeking help.
The 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing in Australia found that mental disorders are common, with 45.5% of people experiencing them at some point in their lives. Anxiety disorders were the most prevalent, followed by affective and substance use disorders. A significant number of individuals had more than one type of mental disorder, and these conditions were associated with disability. Despite this, many people did not seek help for their mental health issues. The survey involved face-to-face interviews with over 8000 community residents aged 16-85, using a standardized diagnostic tool.
