Channel dredging in Florida inlets impacts flow and sedimentation patterns drastically.
Channel dredging in four Florida inlets was studied to understand how it affects flow patterns and sediment movement. Three inlets are dredged regularly, while one has never been dredged. By analyzing historical photos and using a Coastal Modeling System, researchers found that dredging influences the shape of the inlets and how sand moves through them. The study shows that dredging affects the way sediment is carried by the tides and changes the overall shape of the inlets over time.
