Revolutionizing Weather Forecasts: Preemptive EnKF Improves Accuracy Dramatically!
Paper Summary
An ensemble Kalman filter was used to create preemptive forecasts by combining error statistics of model forecasts and observations. These forecasts were more accurate than original 48-hour forecasts but not as accurate as new 24-hour forecasts. The accuracy improved when localized error statistics were used and a model error term was included.
