Revolutionizing Weather Forecasts: Preemptive EnKF Improves Accuracy and Efficiency
An ensemble Kalman filter was used to create preemptive forecasts by combining error statistics of model forecasts and adapting observations. These preemptive forecasts were more accurate than original 48-hour forecasts but slightly less accurate than new 24-hour forecasts. The accuracy improved when localized error statistics were used and a model error term was included.
