Green manures in Malawi boost maize yields without chemical fertilizers.
Green manures like Mucuna, Crotalaria, and Lablab can help increase soil fertility and maize yields in Malawi. In a study over two seasons, these legumes were planted alongside maize, and the results showed that incorporating legume residues into the soil led to higher maize yields compared to just planting maize alone. Adding inorganic fertilizer further boosted maize yields, with the most efficient use seen at 35 kg N per hectare. The timing of incorporating the legume residues did not significantly affect maize yields. Overall, using green manures in combination with inorganic fertilizers can be a promising strategy to improve maize production in Malawi.
