Wives' earnings reduce income inequality among Italian households.
The study looked at how changes in the employment of husbands and wives in Italy from 1977 to 1998 affected family income distribution. They found that as more women started working, income inequality among families decreased. On the other hand, as men's employment decreased, income inequality increased. This effect was more pronounced in Northern Italy. Overall, wives' earnings played a significant role in reducing income inequality in households, especially since the mid-1990s.
