New models predict tree growth for better forest management planning.
Researchers developed models to predict how long it takes certain trees to grow to specific heights based on the site's productivity. They used data from tree stem analysis and found that trees reach stump and breast height faster on more productive sites. Ponderosa pine trees showed more variability in growth compared to western larch and Douglas-fir. Equations were created to estimate breast height from stump height, aiding in forest management planning and stand reconstruction.
