Individual land rights key to unlocking agricultural development in Africa
Land rights in Sub-Saharan Africa have changed over time due to political, social, and economic factors. Contrary to popular belief, many areas have individual ownership of land. Even where communal ownership is enforced, households still control cultivation and possession. Individual land rights are important for efficiency, but not all areas have recognized them yet. In some places, there is a need to analyze the benefits and costs of changing land rights to improve equity and productivity.
