New gene discovery could revolutionize plant development and agriculture forever!
Researchers identified genes expressed during early Arabidopsis carpel development using mRNA differential display. They focused on AGAMOUS (AG) gene, which determines carpel identity in flowers. By studying floral mutants, they found two genes expressed in developing carpels: AGL11, a known transcription factor in carpels and ovules, and a new gene called ATCEL2, which codes for an endo-1,4-β-D-glucanase enzyme. ATCEL2 was found in the septum and ovule primordia of young carpels.
