Newly Discovered Volcanic Eruptions in Alaska Rewrite Region's History!
The scientists studied volcanic ash deposits in the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, to learn about past volcanic eruptions. They found seven visible ash layers and seven tiny ash particles in peatland sites. By analyzing the size and chemistry of the ash, they identified eruptions from Augustine, Crater Peak–Mt. Spurr, and Hayes volcanoes in the late Holocene period. Some of these ash layers were already known, but they also discovered new ones, like an eruption from Crater Peak–Mt. Spurr around 430 years ago. This research gives us more information about how volcanic ash is distributed in the region and shows that tiny ash particles can help us learn even more about past eruptions.
