SADC Free Trade Area Fails to Eliminate Trade Barriers, Hurting Regional Integration
The Southern African Development Community's Protocol on Trade aimed to reduce trade barriers in the region, but non-tariff barriers like customs procedures and infrastructure issues are still hindering intra-regional trade. The cost of trading across borders has not decreased since the Protocol was implemented in 2000, and intra-regional trade as a percentage has actually decreased. This shows that the Protocol has not been effective in eliminating non-tariff barriers and facilitating trade in the region.
