Nighttime driving restrictions save lives: study shows significant crash reductions
Graduated driver licensing systems and nighttime curfews can reduce motor vehicle crashes among young drivers. Studies show that a comprehensive graduated licensing program in New Zealand led to a 7%–8% decrease in teen driver crash injuries. Nighttime driving restrictions for teens also significantly lowered crash rates, with curfews before midnight resulting in 23%–25% fewer injuries and fatalities. However, more research is needed to fully assess the effectiveness of these programs in reducing crashes and injuries.
