Omega-3 Supplements Rapidly Boost Heart-Healthy Fatty Acids in Blood
The study looked at how taking omega-3 fatty acids affects the fatty acid levels in the blood and red blood cells. They gave 20 healthy men either omega-3 supplements or olive oil capsules for 4 months, followed by a 3-month break. After 2 months of omega-3 supplements, levels of EPA, DPA, and DHA fatty acids increased in the blood and red blood cells. The levels continued to rise up to 4 months. During the washout period, the levels of these fatty acids decreased slightly, but after 3 months, they were almost back to normal. This shows that omega-3 supplements can change the fatty acid composition in the body, but the effects are reversible.
