Plastic pollution threatens seabird chicks in Great Barrier Reef.
Seabirds in the Great Barrier Reef are eating plastic. A study found that 21% of wedge-tailed shearwater chicks on Heron Island have plastic in their stomachs, with an average of 3.2 fragments each. The most common colors of plastic were off/white and green. The plastic pieces were around 10 mm in size and weighed about 0.056 grams. This shows that more research is needed to understand how much plastic birds are eating, what colors they prefer, and how it affects their population.
