Low back pain is now the top cause of disability worldwide, surpassing 290 other conditions. It was responsible for 58.2 million years lived with disability in 1990, rising to 83 million in 2010. The Global Burden of Disease data shows this increase. Visual tools help display this data. Limitations in current data need addressing for more accurate estimates. Policy changes are needed to reduce the burden of low back pain.
