Plants use toxic molecules to fight off enemies and control growth!
Plants produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) during normal metabolism, which can be harmful but are usually detoxified. They use ROS as signals for defense, cell death, and other processes. Plants have ways to deal with high ROS levels during stress. New research shows that genetic studies help us understand how plants make and remove ROS. By studying how genes respond to ROS, we can learn how plants sense and use these molecules, similar to animals and yeast.
