Bioretention Practices Reduce Urban Flood Risks, Restore Watershed Hydrology
The study explored how small gardens can help manage stormwater in a town by looking at two different ways these gardens could be used. By modeling the flow of water through the gardens from various surfaces, they found that the gardens could reduce how quickly water flows during storms, making flooding less likely. However, they couldn't completely control the amount of water like it was before the town was built. Interestingly, focusing on treating areas with a lot of concrete and asphalt made little difference in how much water the gardens could handle. Overall, the results suggest that having these little gardens throughout the town can help make sure water doesn't rush off too fast during storms.
