The study compared emotional expression in Costa Rica and the United States. People in individualistic cultures express emotions that focus on themselves, while those in collectivistic cultures express emotions that focus on their relationships with others. People in collectivistic cultures are less comfortable expressing negative emotions than those in individualistic cultures.
