Intercropping maize with cowpea boosts forage yield and quality.
The researchers studied how planting different types of legumes with maize affects the amount and quality of forage produced. They tried different planting methods like mixing the seeds together or planting them in rows. They found that planting cowpea with maize in rows spaced 30 cm apart gave the highest amount of green forage. This method also increased the leaf area and improved the protein content of the forage compared to other legume combinations. So, to get better quality forage, it's best to plant forage maize with cowpea in rows spaced 30 cm apart.
