Unemployment benefits in Europe can affect how long people are unemployed and how stable their next job is. A study looked at data from eight European countries and found that while receiving benefits can make unemployment last longer, it can also help people stay in their next job for longer. This effect is stronger in countries with more generous benefit systems and for people who have been unemployed for at least six months. On average, benefit recipients stay employed for two to four months longer than non-recipients, which can make up for the extra time spent looking for a job. This shows that unemployment benefits can help people find more stable employment in the long run.
