Coastal defense and societal activities found to be compatible in study.
Coastal zones are facing changes due to climate change and human activities. The question is whether protecting the coast and allowing development can work together. To find the best approach, a model was used to balance costs and benefits of different coastal policies. The model considered factors like sea level rise, storms, maintenance costs, and economic activities. By analyzing uncertainties and running simulations, it was found that in the Netherlands, coastal defense and societal activities can coexist without conflict.
