Field beans and peas fix nitrogen, boosting crop yields and sustainability.
Field bean and pea plants were studied in Southern Alberta to see how much nitrogen they get from the air. The researchers used a special method with a nitrogen isotope to measure this. They found that both bean and pea plants didn't get much nitrogen from the air at first, but as they grew, they started getting more. By the end of the season, the bean plants got most of their nitrogen from the air, while the pea plants got about half. The pods of the plants had more nitrogen than what they got from the air.
