Invasive silver and bighead carp thriving in southeastern Oklahoma waters.
Silver carp and bighead carp, originally from Asia, have been found in southeastern Oklahoma. A survey conducted in 2012 in the Kiamichi River and other nearby areas revealed the presence of both species. The researchers used electrofishing gear and gill nets to capture a total of 13 carp, including five silver carp and eight bighead carp. These fish were found in three out of the four water bodies sampled. The study also measured the weight, length, and egg mass of the captured fish, and determined their age by removing pectoral spines. The findings suggest that silver and bighead carp are established in southeastern Oklahoma and are likely reproducing.
