Novel plant protein SEUSS represses gene, leading to transformed floral organs.
A new gene called SEUSS was discovered that helps control the expression of a gene called AGAMOUS in plants. When SEUSS is mutated, AGAMOUS is turned on too early and in the wrong places, causing changes in flower development. When SEUSS mutations are combined with mutations in another gene called LEUNIG, the effects are even more severe. SEUSS makes a protein that likely works with LEUNIG to regulate AGAMOUS expression. This research helps us understand how plants control the development of their flowers.
