Using artificial lures saves more walleyes, expanding fishing opportunities!
The study looked at how many walleyes caught by anglers survived after being released. They found that walleyes caught on leeches had a higher mortality rate (10%) compared to those caught on artificial lures (0%). In one pond, 5% of released walleyes died, but it could have been as high as 23%. Walleyes caught on leeches were smaller and more likely to be males. The way the fish were hooked also affected their survival, with leech-caught walleyes being hooked deeper. Overall, the study suggests that releasing angler-caught walleyes could help expand recreational fishing opportunities.
