Soil compaction from heavy traffic threatens Bavarian farmland productivity.
Soil compaction from heavy machinery is a global issue. A study in Bavaria looked at how different tillage methods and soil moisture levels affect soil compaction during sugar beet harvesting. Plots tilled conventionally were compacted more deeply in wet soil, while reduced tillage plots were less affected. Medium soil moisture levels had the best soil properties. Chiselling plots were less impacted by traffic than ploughed plots. Compaction effects were not seen below 0.3 meters in chiselled plots. Soil moisture is the key factor in soil compaction.
