Managers in Alberta are facing challenges in balancing walleye fishery recovery with high fishing pressure. By implementing catch and release and strict length limits, they successfully increased catch rates of overfished stocks. However, this led to new problems like low harvest rates and illegal harvest of undersized walleyes. The recovery of walleye stocks also impacted commercial fisheries, causing bycatch issues and economic challenges. Resolving these dilemmas will require significant changes in fisheries management techniques in Alberta.
