Green manure boosts potato yields and soil health in India.
Green manuring with Crotalaria juncea or Sesbania aculeata increased potato yields more than using Zea mays or Pennisetum typhoides as fodder crops. Phosphorus applied to potatoes had varying effects on wheat crops depending on the previous green manuring or fodder cropping methods. Phosphorus application to wheat was not necessary if applied to potatoes economically. C. juncea increased phosphorus availability but decreased potassium, while P. typhoides depleted soil potassium. Sesbania aculeata improved soil organic carbon, but P. typhoides depleted it.
