The article explores how the complexity of software affects maintenance productivity. By analyzing the cyclomatic complexity metric, which measures program complexity, researchers found that dividing this metric by the system size gives a useful predictor of maintenance productivity. This new complexity density ratio was tested on a small sample of maintenance projects and showed promising results.
