Scientists at the Savannah River Plant have developed a process to turn highly radioactive waste into glass. The waste is currently stored as soluble salts and solids that need further processing before being turned into glass. They have successfully removed aluminum from some waste, washed out soluble salts, and stripped mercury. These processes have been tested with real waste and have shown positive results.
