Nitrogen-rich legumes boost neighboring plant growth in multi-species grasslands.
Legumes like white clover, red clover, and lucerne help provide nitrogen to grass-legume mixtures for animal feed. In a study in Denmark, these legumes transferred nitrogen to neighboring plants like grasses, birdsfoot trefoil, and chicory. Grasses with fibrous roots got more nitrogen from legumes than plants with taproots. Manure application increased nitrogen transfer to grasses. Throughout the season, the legumes transferred around 40 kg of nitrogen per hectare to nearby plants. Different plants received varying amounts of nitrogen from the legumes, depending on their root characteristics and growth strategies in the multi-species grassland.
