Coastal overwash during hurricanes and storms can be destructive but also important for barrier islands. Current knowledge on measuring and modeling overwash is limited. There are few models to predict overwash and its effects accurately. Existing models can simulate some aspects of overwash, but improvements are needed to capture different types of washover. More data from lab and field studies are necessary to enhance modeling capabilities.
