Dolphins Stealing Bait from Crab Pots Threaten Florida Fishery
Blue crab fishermen in the Indian River Lagoon reported dolphins stealing bait fish from their crab pots. Researchers observed interactions between dolphins and crab boats, finding that only a small percentage of pots showed evidence of dolphin interaction. Dolphins were seen begging at boats, feeding on bait fish, and getting entangled in crab pot float lines. The study showed that increasing bait-well door security can reduce negative impacts on both the fishery and dolphins. Seasonal trends were noted, with interactions peaking in the summer. Overall, about 16.6% of dolphins sighted interacted with fishing boats.
