New method accurately measures moisture in shrinking soils, improving agricultural practices.
Time‐domain reflectometry (TDR) was tested for measuring moisture in deformable soils like clay and peats. By studying the relation between dielectric constant and moisture content, researchers found that existing models underestimated moisture levels in shrinking soil. Taking into account air-exposure and using actual moisture content values improved accuracy compared to uncorrected values. This shows that current models don't fully consider soil deformation when determining moisture content.
