The article discusses how NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is advocating for a holistic design approach over a piece part design approach. In a piece part design approach, individual pieces are developed separately without considering the final product as a whole. In contrast, a holistic design approach evaluates the final product early and frequently during the design process, considering how individual parts interact with each other and with users and the environment. Examples from the development of the Materials Science Research Rack - 1 show that a failure in design can be avoided by taking a holistic approach, leading to successful designs.
